Government of India Launches A Free Online Course on RTI

 September 5, 2014

Right to Information gives a lot of power to a citizen but most of us don't know how to use this tool. The Indian government has now launched an online course to give a hands-on experience of RTI. The course will help you understand the tool and will also give you a practical exposure to the same.

The Right to Information Act (RTI) was a landmark act of the Parliament of India. Under this act, any citizen of the country can request any information from a public authority (largely referring to the Government). The authority is required to reply to this request within 30 days. This law has helped bring out many aspects about the functioning of the government in the past and has also helped in rectifying many issues.

However, most people are not quite aware on how to file an RTI request, what are the procedures and where to file it. To address this information gap, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India (GoI), in association with the Centre for Good Governance has launched a free online course on RTI.

As the website puts it:
"….the course has been bifurcated into two versions, namely – 7-Day Online Course (English) and 15-Day Online Certificate Course (English)."

While the 7-day course will be introductory in nature, the 15-day course will be extensive and with a hands-on orientation whereby candidates will have to practically apply the RTI Act during the course. In other words, the 15-day course will be based on the principle of "learning while doing".

It's free and it's important!
