"What is the meaning of life, if you are not useful to society even after death? If you are unable to do anything to society when alive at least do so after death by donating the body for the benefit of medical students for their anatomy and other experiments".

This is the slogan of a Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) employee K Shravan Kumar, who has launched a crusade to educate the people about the importance of organ and body donation after death.

Working as EP Fitter cum Mechanic at Open Cast Project-2 at SCCL Ramagundam region, Shravan Kumar was moved over the noble gesture of his younger brother Ashok Kumar, a teacher who died of heart attack in 2006 and donated his eyes and body to the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) Warangal.

Inspired by his brother's service to society, Shravan Kumar and his wife Krishna Kumari have pledged the donation of their bodies after death to KMC and signed papers accordingly in 2008. Learning about the importance of donating organs of a person, he founded the Sadashaya foundation on October 2, 2008 and launched the campaign of educating people to donate their eyes and body after death.

As part of the campaign, he was instrumental in educating the parents of Prashanth Reddy, a brain dead, patient for the donation of organs. Later, he also collected 12 pairs of eyes from the dead persons in the coal belt region. Thanks to his mission, he could collect pledging letters for eye donation from 1500 persons and 50 persons had come forward to donate their bodies after death.

With the permission given by the SCCL authorities, he could campaign about the donation of eyes and body at all the mines in the coal belt region of four districts. He was awarded with "Athma bhandhuvu" award by Jana Jagarana kala samithi of Suddala Ashok Teja and felicitations from Akkineni Nageshwar Rao at KIMS hospital Hyderabad for his crusade on educating people about the organ and body donation.

Shravan Kumar, who believes that social service gives him complete satisfaction, said that he was against dowry system and announced to perform the marriage of his sons without dowry. He said that he feels satisfied if anyone gets benefited with his social service programme. He urged the Singareni authorities to open an eye donation centre at Godavarikhani for the collection of eye-balls from the dead.

Inspired by his late brother, Shravan Kumar has been motivating others to donate Organs
