EAR & THROAT & NOSE PRECAUTIONS:

 

EAR PRECAUTIONS

  1. DO NOT let water go into your ears. Do use clean towels to dry  your ears. Keep ears dry and clean; because wet ears cause infection.
  2. DO NOT put anything (hot or cold oil, herbal remedies, liquids such  as Kerosene, buds or pins) in your ears; because foreign bodies cause infection or rupture ear drum.
  3. Teach children NOT to put anything in their ears – seeds, beads,  stones, sticks.
  4. DO NOT use oils for ear pain; because it may aggravate infection.
  5. Only use ear drops after consulting the Doctor; because indiscriminate use may cause serious problem like nerve deafness.
  6. DO NOT panic when live insects enter your ear; pour oil in the ear immediately which will kill the insect and then consult your doctor for removing it.
  7. DO NOT try to clean your ears with ear buds, hair-pins, toothpicks or anything else; because Ears have a self cleaning mechanism, they can clean themselves.
  8. DO NOT leave cotton wool in your ears unless told to do so by  your doctor.
  9. DO NOT swim in dirty water; because it may cause infection.
  10. When you get pus in the ear, ear pain, giddiness or sudden onset of hearing loss, consult the doctor immediately; because delay may cause permanent hearing loss.
  11. DO NOT slap on ears of others; because it may rupture the ear drum and lead to the loss of hearing, infection and later it may require operation.
  12. Use Ear protectors while swimming; because wet ears cause infection.
  13. Use ear protectors when working in noisy environment; take regular hearing test and doctor’s advice every 6 months; because noise may cause permanent hearing loss.
  14. Deaf and hard of hearing children and adults need to be included in all activities in your community. DO NOT let them feel left out. Deaf and hard of hearing people can do everything except hear normally!
  15. Encourage people with hearing loss to have their ears checked and their hearing tested.
  16. If children do not turn to the side of sound after 6 months of age, consult an ENT specialist immediately, because it may be congenital deafness and the child may become deaf and dumb. If children do not hear within 3 years from their birth, they will become dumb because for the development of the speech, child has to hear the sound.

NOSE PRECAUTIONS:

  1. DO NOT blow your nose when you get cold or nose block, sputum should be squeezed back and spit through the mouth; because blowing may cause sinus or ear infection.
  2. DO NOT prick inside the nose; because it may cause bleeding or infection.
  3. DO NOT be scared when your nose bleeds, just pinch the nose with two fingers and breathe through the mouth for 5 minutes in sitting posture. Or keep ice cubes over nose and consult your doctor if bleeding is not controlled; because anxiety, lying posture may aggravate the bleeding.
  4. Take regular treatment for high BP on doctor’s advice; because high blood pressure may cause nose bleeding.
  5. DO NOT use snuff (powders) in nose; because it may cause bleeding or septal perforation.
  6. DO NOT let children to put foreign bodies like thermo coal balls, foams, seeds, rubber, pins, writing pencils in nose; because they may be dangerous when inhaled into lungs.
  7. DO NOT be exposed to cold air, dust and allergic foods; because they may aggravate allergy for the allergic patients.
  8. Use anti-allergic sprays and tablets for long time on doctor’s advice; because non use of drugs may cause recurrence of allergy.
  9. DO NOT neglect common cold- cold may lead to sinus or throat infection or ear infection through a tube connecting between ear and nose.

THROAT PRECAUTIONS

  1. DO NOT shout loudly for long time; because it may cause hoarse voice and require operation if it persists for long time.
  2.  Use properly filtered or sterilized drinking water.
  3.  DO NOT smoke tobacco (cigarette, beedi or cigar); because they may cause lung or throat cancer.
  4.  DO NOT drink alcohol excessively.
  5.  DO NOT chew tobacco (gutka, pan parag or pan); because they may cause mouth cancer.
  6.  Brush your teeth twice daily and massage gums daily; because unhygienic mouth may cause gum bleeding, carries tooth.
  7.  Chew the food equally on both sides of the mouth; because unequal chewing may cause jaw problems.
  8.  DO NOT keep coins, seeds, acids or cleaning solutions available to children; because children tend to keep anything in their mouth; swallowing or inhalation into lungs may be dangerous and may require operation to remove them.
  9.  DO NOT swallow bones while eating meat, chicken or fish; be patient to remove them; because if bones get stuck, it may require operation to remove them from food passage.
  10.  DO NOT neglect mouth ulcers; because they may turn dangerous.
