Hello BOSF, APEC, UAV,
We need volunteers for an Awareness Campaign!
Background: Pollerama jatara is a famous festival celebrated in Venkatagiri town of Nellore District involving a horrific and mass animal sacrifice which is of grave national concern. The District authorities including the Collector and DSP have requested Blue Cross of Hyderabad and other state level animal welfare organizations to conduct an awareness campaign against the animal sacrifice in Venkatagiri .
In an effort to make the public aware of the environmental ill effects caused by animal sacrifice and the illegal nature of such practices we are organizing extensive door to door campaigns with the help of volunteers.
Volunteer responsibility:
Volunteers, willing to support this cause, would interact with the women of the villages and explain them the alternatives to animals that they wish to offer to the local deity for the below mentioned valid reasons accepted by the government.
· Law and Order: Sacrificing animals in religious places is illegal as per law in Andhra Pradesh.
The animals slaughtered in huge numbers are never checked by the Veterinarians for the diseases the animals carry and 99% of such animals are brought from nearby villages. This has 2 major negative implications on Economy and Hygiene.
· Economy: The local cattle, which form the livelihood of many poor families catch the infections from the animals brought in for sacrifice and they ultimately die leaving the already poor families in a much worse situation.
· Hygiene: Meat produced from the sacrificed animals could carry zoonotic diseases (diseases that transmit between animal and human communities), which lead to public health hazards.
· Environment: The pool of Animal blood and the unwanted body parts are left unattended. This pollutes the ground water and the surroundings.
(My experience: Officially I have inspected many slaughter houses in AP, in every such case when we got the ground water samples tested, the results were the same – 'Not fit for Human Consumption'. The residents complained as they are suffering from various air borne diseases like skin rashes etc; )
· Trauma: The mental disturbance the children undergo when they see animals being slaughtered in public places is unimaginable.
For all these reasons, the volunteer would suggest the villagers to opt for an environment friendly fest. And if for any reason they don't wish to accept our suggestion, the villagers will be given the alternative to conduct the animal slaughter more humanely and hygienically in few special make-shift cells arranged for this purpose by the government.
If you are interested in volunteering, please send me a mail by 11am tomm – 14th Sep 2010.
