Every PS to have a woman constable

Their presence will help women lodge complaints without inhibitions: Sunita Lakshma Reddy

All police stations in the State will have at least one woman constable or a woman home guard soon to make women complainants comfortable when they approach the police.

This was announced by Director-General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy in response to a suggestion made by Minister for Women Development, Child and Juvenile Welfare V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy at a workshop on 'Rescue and Rehabilitation of Women, Children and Destitute Persons', held for police personnel here on Tuesday.

Monitoring cells in CID

The DGP also announced setting up of two monitoring cells in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) wing in addition to the Women Protection Cell (WPC). The juvenile delinquency and crime against women cells would act swiftly on related crimes and incidents as the WPC had been dealing only with cases booked under Section 498-A of the IPC.

The Minister said it was a good development that all departments concerned with women and children had come together. In spite of several laws in place for their protection from exploitation, the incidence of crime against them was on the rise, she noted.

She suggested the police and requested the judiciary to dispose of women related cases swiftly. She felt that the presence of women constables and home guards in police stations would help complainants approach the police without any inhibitions.

Reforms in training

Special Chief Secretary of the Women Development and Child Welfare Department Chaya Ratan suggested reforms in the training curriculum for judiciary to address problems of women, children and juveniles more empathetically.

She also emphasized the need for change in the attitude of the police and judiciary in handling cases of exploitation/crime against women and children.

Additional DGP of Government Railway Police V.S.K. Kaumudi and Additional DGP of CID S.V. Ramana Murthy also spoke.
